Student accommodation providers across the country are currently counting down to the start of the new student calendar, which marks the end of a year of planning.
Similarly for students themselves, the start of their university time can be daunting for more reasons than one. Many have little to zero experience running a home, managing bills and dealing with security – so responsibility lies with accommodation providers to reassure new residents it’s all in hand.
Here are just some of the things students might consider as they embark on their new chapter, and what we, as a responsible provider of accommodation, do to combat any worries:
Perks:
To some students, an en-suite, cleaner and on-site gym are often top of the list of requirements. However, there are other, potentially more important benefits, and ones you will rarely experience in HMOs (houses of multiple occupancy) or private lettings.
For example, our welfare support system for residents ensures each resident has ongoing care whilst studying away from home. Our communal spaces encourage students to mix, whether they are socialising in the living areas, or cooking in the kitchen, so the risk of isolation is significantly reduced. Undertaking research each year with past and present students, we know this benefit massively outweighs luxuries like a hot tub.
Security:
Which 18 year old has ever considered the importance of an alarm system? Probably very few.
We’re realists; we know crime happens wherever you live, so we do our best to mitigate the risks. We choose to develop in areas with high footfall so students are never on their own. To counteract any potential risks, our blocks are secure by design and also have 24-hour security available to protect our residents and their belongings, a benefit that does not occur in many other accommodation options.
Budgets:
From food to books, socialising to bus fare, there is a lot that students will need to account for, and on a limited budget. A key part of student life is learning to budget and plan ahead for all of these things. Living in a HMO means allocating cash for gas, electric and internet additionally to your rent budget – and this means dealing with lots of suppliers. However, most private developments offer an all-inclusive bills option. It’s something we do as standard, ensuring no nasty surprises, so students can spend more time studying, socialising, or enjoying their new city.
Honesty:
The NUS (National union of Students) and DPS (Deposit Protection Scheme) have warned students of rogue landlords, taking hefty deposits for fake properties, only to disappear once it’s time to move in. Only by using a reputable student accommodation provider will this risk be taken away. CityBlock developments are all ANUK accredited and fully compliant, adhere to the latest health and safety regulations and deposits are held by the Deposit Protection Scheme.
At CityBlock, we cater to what students want, but most importantly, what they need. Student welfare is a massive driver for us, and we work to ensure all residents have a happy time when they live in one of our developments.
